Our story

After two and a half years in development, Lodsworth Croquet Club opened its lawn on May 10th 2013.

The need for a croquet club in Lodsworth was realised when a group of us visited Woolbeding House in Stedham. It was a warm sunny day and a beautiful croquet lawn was set up next the magnificent house. It dawned on us that we had all had warm memories of croquet in our childhood years.

It was there and then that we set about rekindling those feelings by building our own lawn in the village. A feasibility study was undertaken, a poll in the village was completed to establish a need for such a club and grants were applied for. The rest as they say is history.

The photos below give a snapshot of our development, from car parking area to lawn, pavilion and croquet club in Lodsworth.

Since then Lodsworth Croquet Club has gone from strength to strength.  We have a strong membership of both social and active players, many of whom now play in inter club matches and club competitions.

We have one full size competition croquet lawn which is kept to a very high standard by our green keeper Jason Humphrey. At present we play Golf Croquet only which is now recognised as a standard game throughout the world. It is an easy game to learn but as you may imagine, a difficult game to master!

The club was originally set up so that villagers could play croquet socially with friends and family and with other villagers. However, since our opening eight years ago many of our club members have become very good players and therefore needed a more challenging itinerary. As a result, we have been invited to play many friendly matches ‘away’ with other clubs in the South East. We have reciprocated at our home lawn and made many new friends in the process. The other clubs include Littlehampton, Rother Valley, West Chiltington, West Wittering, Southwick, Bognor Regis and Ryde on the Isle of Wight.
