Match Reports 2025

Thursday August 14th Friendly v Rother Valley Home

Report follows

Sunday August 3rd Carnival Day at Sussex County

Another win for Lodsworth!

A very glamorous Team Lodsworth swept all before them at the South East Croquet Federations event at Southwick, achieving a convincing win in the costume competition, backed up by a share of the prize for the best dressed table.

The croquet proved to be more challenging, some narrow defeats in a tough morning session were frustrating, but fortified by an excellent lunch. The team put in some determined performances in the afternoon singles to ensure we finished near the top of the table. The fashionable five were Jean, Jo, Elaine, Hugh and Peter.

Thursday 31st July Away league match against Guildford and Godalming

Well you probably all know the result by now, we won 5-4. It was close. It was at the G&G lawns which were like billiard tables!  No real evidence of the irrigation system and enquiry about how it was working did not go down well!

Honours were shared in the first two doubles matches. In the next 4 singles games only Wilson lost 🙄 so we were ahead.  In the final round we lost both singles but were saved by John West and Richard Givan who won the doubles. Indeed Richard was the star who didn’t lose a game.

Many thanks to the team of John West, Hugh Brown and Richard Givan who played yesterday and to Peter Hill, Jo Huffener and Elaine Wilson who have played in the other league matches.

Thursday 24th July Friendly match against Chichester & Fishbourne

Lodsworth team were invited to take part in a friendly match against Chichester & Fishbourne. These games are not all about the winning, but the taking part and enjoying a friendly game of croquet.

I'd like to thank our team members, Jane and Stewart Sims, Hugh Brown and of course myself John West who played to the best of our abilities on their challenging lawns.

Sunday 20th July Centenary Cup Littlehampton

Centenary Cup success!

After a long day playing 13 matches against tough opponents in some challenging conditions team Lodsworth emerged victorious to win the Centenary Cup with a final score of 10 wins and 3 losses. Victory was sealed in the final round of matches with our last doubles pairing putting in a winning performance to leave Lodsworth clear of the chasing pack. The winning team; Richard Givan, Peter Hill, Jo Huffener, Elaine and Mike Wilson.

Saturday 12th July South East Challenge at Sussex County

On Saturday a team consisting of Mike& Elaine Wilson Peter Hill and Jo Huffener went to Southwick to play in the Southern Challenge, a level team competition. The lawns were in fantastic condition but the hoops were impossible! They are made of stainless steel and very springy! No chance of rolling a ball in.
There were 6 teams and Lodsworth came fifth but many games went to the golden hoop. A great experience playing against scratch players!

Wednesday 25th June  League match   Away to Compton

Today a team from Lodsworth travelled to Compton Croquet Club in Eastbourne for their first away league match of the season. The lawns were lightning fast due to insufficient irrigation which took some time to adjust to and the handicaps meant we started every game needing 9 or 10 hoops to win!
Starting with 2 doubles games it was level with both games going to the golden hoop which in our game meant hoop 16!
Then it was 4 singles and we managed to win them all thus guaranteeing a match victory! With no break it was onto the final round of 1 doubles and 2 singles before a welcome sit down to lunch. Final result 6-3 win to Lodsworth.
Team today was John West, Elaine Wilson, Peter Hill and Jo Huffener

Thursday/Friday June 12/13th    Friendly match v Ryde Isle of Wight   Away

Ryde CC were a very friendly and hospitable group and also strong croquet players with a high number of league players on their midst.  They have four very good lawns which are open year round but perhaps they play more and socialise just slightly less than us!  An enjoyable final round was with blended teams of players from both sides challenging each other, making it slightly less competitive. We played as well as we could and had a few notable successes, however overall they proved the dominant team.

Tuesday 3rd June   Friendly match v Littlehampton Away

Match cancelled due to rain.

Friday May 30th  League match v Aldershot Home

Lodsworth welcomed Aldershot for their first league game of the season. They are a new club with players bringing handicaps of 7,10,12 and 14 so most games started -2/2!
Happily the team comprising of Mike and Elaine Wilson, Hugh Brown and John West won 7-2 and the away team will have learnt a lot in defeat!

Wednesday 7th May  Friendly match against West Wittering.

Lodsworth won the first friendly match this afternoon against West Wittering. We played advantage croquet and all the games were very close but Lodsworth came out on top 5-3
Their lawns were much improved and we had a lovely tea afterwards. The team was Mike and Elaine Wilson, Peter Hill and Jo Huffener

Fixtures 2024

Friday 16th August      Friendly match away at Rother Valley

Lodsworth had a friendly match against Rother Valley last Friday. Team was Sandy West, Libby Driscoll, Paul Benzimra and John. The afternoon was quite challenging as three of the matches started on -1. However, true to form Lodsworth won 5-3, so a huge thank you to my team for playing so well.  John West

Friday 9th August     League Match against West Worthing

Today (Friday) we travelled to West Worthing for our last league match. All players played out of their skins with many games going to the golden hoop and we finished the season on a real high winning 7-2!

West Worthing were the 2023 national champions so an amazing result!!

Many thanks to Mike Wilson John West and Peter Hill for playing this season along with myself.

Sunday August 4th  Carnival team event Southwick (handicap)

Maybe entering the carnival at Southwick the day after the BBQ was not our brightest idea but after a slow start we managed to pick up a few wins but no silverware!
However Lodsworth hillbillies were victorious in the fancy dress so bottles of wine will arrive on Thursday! Elaine

Wednesday 31st July Home league match against Guildford and Godalming

Sadly we lost 5-4.  Very very close again!

24th July League Match against Rottingdean

Today we played our second league match at Rottingdean which wins the prize for the most beautiful surroundings being situated in a walled garden open to the public!
All games were very close with every singles match going to the golden hoop but Lodsworth fought hard winning 5-4!

21st July Centenary Cup at Littlehampton

Another excellent day's croquet for Lodsworth Croquet Club, coming second - and only half a point less than the winners! Mind you, there were three winning teams out of eight, each with a score of 8, but we were still just behind them with 7.5.  Great playing from our team of Peter Hill, Jo Huffener,  Hugh Brown, Frank Hill and John West.

13/14 July  Southern Challenge Southwick (level) Team event

Well this weekend Lodsworth played in the Southern challenge down at Southwick. This is a level tournament for B and C handicaps except they made a last minute change to allow 1 A player! Lodsworth fought hard for 5 wins and 2 losses finishing a very respectable 🥉 out of 8 teams. Compton won with a player off -1 and Rottingdean were second with a +1 player
Team was Mike Wilson Elaine Wilson John West Peter Hill Jo Huffener and Richard Givan
Lawns were in fantastic condition as always so a great experience for everyone!

Wed 3rd July Friendly match at home against Guildford and Godalming

Mike Wilson was the team captain and Peter Hill, Jean Farguson and Paul Benzimra joined him.  Lodsworth won 6-4!

League Match Sussex County A     12 June 24

Lodsworth came out winners of the first league match of the season against Sussex A! We were playing advantage croquet and starting all our matches-1 or -2 but the team of Mike and Elaine Wilson John West and Peter Hill fought hard for every hoop and won the match 6-3. Onwards to the next match away to Rottingdean on Wednesday July 24th

Compton mini tournament Sat 8 June 2024

Lodsworth were invited to send a team to the Compton tournament where there were 5 other teams. Each round we played 1 doubles and 2 singles matches in level play!
After some closely fought games Lodsworth managed to come 2nd to one of the home teams so a great result!
The 5 lawns were immaculate and very very fast so it was a great experience for all of us. Thanks to John West Peter Hill Richard Givan Frank Hill and Monica Hill for joining me in this adventure

Friendly match home with Chichester and Fishbourne Tuesday May 14th

30th April 2024: Friendly match away at Chichester and Fishbourne

Well we had fun today on one of the first sunny days for ages. However the results were not brilliant. Peter, Jo, Jean and myself travelled to Fishbourne and the overall score was 6-0 to Fishbourne. They turned out a strong team with handicaps from 2 to a debatable 12 🙄.  The lawns were slow, heavy and uneven. Jean needed to use golf style to get the length of the lawn but never lost her sense of humour.

Despite the overall result lots of the games were close fought.

Tea was good 😀.

Captain Wilson

Chichester & Fishbourne 15 August 2023

Mike and Elaine, Alistair Proctor and Hugh Brown won a very tight match by 5 games to 4, with the final game being won at the 13th hoop! This means that we go into our last League match against Sussex County on August 31st with a very good chance of being undefeated, a feat we have not achieved before. That's Alistair demonstrating his jump shot!

8th August Preston League

A wet, miserable day but Team Lodsworth won 6-3!  Congratulations to Tim Johnson, Hugh Brown, Elaine and Mike Wilson.

30th July 2023  SECF GC Teams

The event was the South East Croquet Federations annual Team competion at Southwick, which this year was was billed as a Carnival (possibly to celebrate 20 years of the competition) so all the Teams were asked to dress up!  We took a team of five, Elaine, Mike, Richard, Tim and myself and Elaine had the idea of  going as The Lodsworth Morris Dancers. She brilliantly provided all the ribbons flowers and bells to kit us out. Although most other teams seemed to think we should have won (as did we!), we were pipped at the post by the Clan of Godhelm from Guildford and Godalming who had rather splendid Viking Helmets (but nothing else). In the competition itself we did not win despite the best efforts of Mike and Elaine ( both winning all their matches ) and Richard (who won 2 and drew one). It was all very enjoyable despite the rather drizzly and cold weather. Full results will be published later.

June 17/18th - SECF Southern Challenge

A wet bedraggled but happy Lodsworth team after the tournament at Southwick! 4th place with 8 wins. Winners had 9 wins so very close!!
